Types of Contaminated Water

Did you know that there are different types of water in water losses? Depending on how long a water loss is there before it is found, or where the water comes from, it is one of three categories.

Category #1- Clean Water

This water category is when the water comes from a clean, sanitary source. This means that the water poses little to no risk to humans or animals. Examples of this are: broken water supply lines, sink or tub overflows, or any other water line, such as a line to an ice maker.

Category #2 – Grey Water

This water category is when it comes from a source that contains significant contamination. The contamination includes chemical, biological or physical elements that could cause illness or discomfort after exposure. Examples of this are: overflowing toilets with urine, sump pump leaks or discharged water from appliances such as a dishwasher or washing machine. If left too long, grey water can quickly turn into black water, and cause even more damage to your home and health.

Category #3 – Black Water

This water category is when it is considered very harmful. This contamination includes unsanitary agents, dangerous bacteria and fungus, and toxic substances. This category has an extreme risk of causing illness and exposure should be avoided at all costs unless you are a trained professional, in properly fitting personal protective equipment (PPE). Examples of this are: sewage, seawater, and overflow from bodies of water.
